In 2016, Skin & Cancer Foundation Inc. and Melanoma Institute Australia will be joining forces to raise money for national melanoma research as they amalgamate their independent fundraising events. Melanoma March Melbourne will mark the 10th anniversary of March Against Melanoma™ (formerly March for Melanoma) which was originally founded by Louise White of the Emily Tapp Melanoma Foundation Inc in 2007.

The local committee of Nathan Jones and Amanda Lucci - whose lives have been touched by melanoma - are passionate about raising awareness and funds for breakthrough research which improves quality of life for people living with melanoma and one day may also lead to a cure.

Melanoma March Melbourne will kick off at 9am (registrations from 7:30am) from the Pillars of Wisdom in the Kings Domain Gardens along Alexandra Avenue, before making its way around Melbourne's iconic Tan Track. The walk is easy and great for the whole family. Taking part is not only good for your health, but you'll also be fundraising and raising awareness of Australia's national cancer, melanoma.

The team in Melbourne are extremely excited about hosting their third annual Melanoma March in their local city. Melanoma March Melbourne will kick off at 9am (registrations from 7:30am) from the start of the Tan Track, off Alexandra Ave near Olympic Boulevard, before making their way around the Tan Track.

In 2016, participants of the event are welcome to march, walk, stroll or even run the event. We encourage participants running the event to make their way to the front of the pack at the start of the event. Please note; this is not a timed event.

Skin & Cancer Foundation Inc. is excited to be working with Melanoma Institute Australia to deliver Melanoma March Melbourne 2016. Skin & Cancer Foundation Inc. is a not-for-profit, DGR registered charity that provides specialist clinical treatment, education and research for a variety of skin diseases and skin cancers, including melanoma. Established in 1987 the Foundation has become a centre of excellence in skin care.

Getting there

The Tan is located within close proximity to the city, tram and train lines. Parking bays are located in and around the Botanic Gardens but are limited. Flinders Street Station is the closest train station to the March. From Flinders St, Marchers can take a tram along St Kilda Road and then walk a short distance, through the park, to the start/finish line at the Pillars of Wisdom. The closest tram stop is 7B, Rod Laver Arena on the western side of the Gardens (close to start line). Tram routes 3,5,6,8,16,64,67 & 72 all travel down St Kilda Road on the eastern side, and we recommend Marchers disembark at Grant Street, stop 17 and walk the shirt distance across the park. Please visit the Public Transport Victoria website for more information.

What to wear

We encourage all Melanoma Marchers to practice their sun safety while taking part in this event. Sunscreen will be available at all events, but we suggest that you apply your sunscreen before leaving home. Participants are also encouraged to dress appropriately with sun-safe clothing, hats and sunglasses and remember your comfortable shoes.

Can you help?

As a not-for-profit organisation, these events are all run by volunteers. All profits go directly toward funding research projects at Melanoma Institute Australia. If you or your business has the capacity to help with the organisation of the event (printing flyers, sharing on social media, loaning pop-up marquees to the organisers etc) it would be greatly appreciated. Please email us if you feel you can help.
